CHANGING
LANDSCAPE OF KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION AND MEASUREMENT ISSUES
The
presentation discusses the rationale and evolution of quantitative approach to
assess scientific activity and its practical utility. Some major contemporary
issues in science measurement are highlighted such as increasing need of big
datasets ‘Big data’, visulisation and analytics; multiple loci of knowledge
production and emergence of interdisciplinary research; the evolution of
bibliometrics with an increasing demand now of applying it in research
assessment, funding and in decision making context; hybrid indicators among
others. Some illustrative examples are presented to draw attention to the
contemporary issues and challenges. The presentation concludes by highlighting
exciting new possibilities and plausible new directions for addressing the challenges
to make quantitative approach gain more acceptability within the science
community.
