BACKGROUND
New Paradigms are crafted by Contemporary Research in Information
Science through a multi-disciplinary approach with influence from bordering
disciplines such Education, Sociology, Psychology, Behavioural Sciences apart
from predominant perspectives from Computer Science. The theme of this
conference is to provide a platform to educationists, Information specialists
and Library professionals to explore this multi- disciplinary approach by
integrating technologies in understanding the implicit and explicit functions
of information, innovation and communication.

OBJECTIVES
• The principal objective
of this Convention is to provide a platform for exchange of knowledge, ideas
& learning experience among the Librarians, Information specialists,
Scientists, Information providers & persons related to LIS.
• To identify emerging innovations
in the field of Library and Information Science

Practicing Librarians and
Information Specialists, Academicians, IT Professionals, Scientists, Students
and Faculties of LIS etc.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Papers based on Case
studies, Researches, Practical experiences, etc. on the main theme and
sub-themes of the Seminar are invited from the interested participants. The
Paper should be within 6000 word including Abstract of about 300 words with 4
keywords and typed in MS-WORD in 12-point Times New Roman. All the references
should be properly tagged and referred following Chicago Manual Style. The
authors should agree with the transfer of the copyright of the papers to SIS,
New Delhi and the NIT Silchar. The same should be sent as e-mail attachment to
the Organizing Secretary on or before 30th August
2012.
All the received papers will be peer–reviewed. Only the accepted papers will be
published in an edited book format to be published under the aegis of SIS, India.
General Instructions:
1.
Both invited and contributed papers will be considered
2.
A generalized presentation should be avoided
3. A declaration by the
author(s) should be made separately that the paper(s) has/ have not been sent
elsewhere for publication/presentation
4.
All accepted papers will be invited for presentation
5.
The decision of the Editorial Committee will be final.

ACCOMMODATION
Delegates
requiring accommodation during the Convention & Conference are requested to
fill in the accommodation format in the registration form which can be
downloaded from the website. Accommodation will be provided inthe institute
guest house, other guest houses, and hostels. Limited accommodation is
available for Students. All requests for accommodation must accompany demand
drafts of required amounts drawn in favor of SIS 2012 and payable at State

NIT
Silchar is located on the Silchar - Hailakandi road at a distance of about 8
K.M. away from the railway station/bus stand. Silchar is linked to the rest of
the country by road, rail and air. Transport facilities by the way of day
super/night super bus, are available from Guwahati/Shillong/Aizwal/Agartala/Imphal
to Silchar.
CLIMATE
The state of Assam
experiences a maximum temperature of 36° Celsius and a minimum temperature as
low as 10° Celsius in upper Himalayas. The annual rainfall is 2484.5 mm and the
rainy season is from June to October. The winter stretches from November to February.
The climate of Silchar will be moderately cool during November. The
participants are advised to bring some woollen clothes as during November the
weather will be moderately colder one. The temperature will be between 17 and 30
Degree Celsius during morning and night.
THE HOST
The National Institute of Technology, Silchar (An
Institute of National Importance) is one of the premier national level
institutions for technical education in North East India. Government of India
as a joint venture with Government of Assam established Regional Engineering
College, Silchar in 1967 with the objective of imparting quality engineering
education, providing cosmopolitan outlook among students and fostering a spirit
of National Integration. This institution has been transformed and upgraded to
National Institute of Technology, Silchar with a Deemed University Status with
effect from 28.06.2002. The institute has been subsequently made into a fully
funded Government of India institution. The institute is situated in an
extending campus about 540 acres of undulating land and lakes surround by tea
estates and hillocks providing an ideal environment for studies.
LIBRARY@NIT SILCHAR
The Central
Library which is the heart of the Institute was established in 1977. It provides one of the important academic
services to the Institute. It is a well equipped Library, centrally located
with easy access and does provide right impetus for the intellectual growth of the
students, teachers, research scholars & others around. Presently the Library is a part of the LTT
building with 997 Sq. Ft. floor area & having around 90,000 collections of
documents.
The National Institute of Technology Silchar
Library with its modern collection of knowledge resources and innovative
information services fills an essential role for students, faculty, and the
surrounding community in their intellectual pursuits. It is a hybrid library
with the state-of-the-art technological applications. The Library holds
knowledge resources predominantly related to Science and Technology, Social Sc
& other allied subjects. The
Library is now fully computerized with an integrated system connected to the
Campus Network providing e-resource facility to the institute community.The
entire Library collection including the CD-ROM databases and the online
databases are made available through Institute’s network. Users can access the
online databases through Institute’s network. On-line
Public Access Catalogue facility is available at the ground Floor of the
Library. OPAC can also be accessed through any terminal on the Campus Network.
Library collection can also be searched through Web OPAC.
The Library offers a range of information services
to support the learning process set to the highest professional standards. The
Library is holding membership of DELNET, New Delhi for inter library loan.
National Institute of Technology Silchar Library is an active member of INDEST
Consortium through which online full text journals can be accessed.
SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION
SCIENCE (SIS)
The Society for Information Science (SIS) (http://www.sis.org.in) founded in 1975, works in the broad domain of Information Sciences. The Society for
Information Science (SIS) was formed with the following aims;
i) To promote interchange of information in the discipline of information science and its subdivision amongst the specialists and between specialists and the public.
ii) To encourage and
assist the professionals to maintain the integrity and competence of the
profession.
iii) To foster a sense of
partnership amongst the professionals engaged in these fields.
The Society is of the firm opinion that there should be systematic approach in adapting new information technology with cot-benefit analysis. There should also be a plan to strengthen infrastructure viz., to create manpower and maintenance support to the new technology. The Society is firmly committed to provide a congenial environment for interaction among information innovation, industry, technology management and services which are socially relevant in the interest of the Nation. The SIS functions through an Executive Committee consisting of experts from different institutions and assisted by various sub-committees for carrying out its programme.
Society for Information Science (SIS) is an all India
professional body devoted to encouraging interaction among information
professionals, scientists, managers and users. The Society is truly
professional in nature. It enrolls only the qualified persons as members after
the applications have been screened and approved by the Membership Screening
Committee which is duly nominated by the Executive Committee.
The Society has come a
long way in 36 years of its existence; it has been able to peruse the programme
quite successfully maintaining its vibrant character. It is a body of experts
and leading professionals from different esteemed Indian institutions such as
CSIR, IITs, IIMs, ICMR, and different universities, colleges, and others in the
field of information Science. The most important programme of SIS i.e. Annual
Conventions are being organized regularly every year in different parts of the
country. SIS has organized the event in most of the states of India but it will
be for the first time one NE state will be holding the SIS Convention. The last SIS convention SIS 2011 was held in CSIR- URDIP, Pune on the theme 'Patinformatics for
Research and Business Planning'. SIS Conventions, cover the topics, which in
a way reflect SIS’s forward thinking about selecting topics from the frontier
areas of information science and technology.
The SIS awards Fellowships to members in recognition of their
outstanding contributions to information Science and to Society. The Young
Information Scientist Award has been instituted in 1989 in the memory of Late
Shri A.S. Raizada, Founder Secretary of SIS. The publications of SIS include
SISCOM and SISTRANS.
